Holiday Rice Warmers 2025

I have been making rice warmers for quite a few years and these particular ones were supposed to be sewn for last year's Christmas season, but I never got around to it! Thank goodness Christmas comes every year so everything was just sitting there waiting for me! ha ha! I really thought I already had a tutorial for these rice warmers, but I only had an old post showing the ones I made a few years ago.

I would have taken better photos of JUST the rice warmers and taken process photos, but I didn't since I really thought I had a tutorial put together! But, they really are SO super easy; a perfect beginners project for all ages. I really love the size of the warmers I made this year because they are large enough to hold, place on a sore muscle, stomach cramps, or used as an ice-pack.

I cut my flannel to measure 7 inches by 9 1/2 and sewed around the perimeter with right sides together using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Leave an opening on one of the short ends and use a funnel to add the rice. Please note: I did purchase some heat-resistant thread for making these warmers because I think I read somewhere that some threads can melt in the microwave!

Try adding some essential oils to the rice if you want something scented. Stitch up the end once the rice is in; I used about 3 1/3-4 cups of long grain rice. This was the perfect amount so I could still stitch up the end with my sewing machine. I always like pinning the opening closed where it begins and where it ends with a few pins in between. This allows me to keep it tidy and only sew where it needs it rather than the entire length of the short end or worse-case....not sewing enough and have the rice spill out!

I'm sharing all of the details for the tags HERE. I packaged up the rice warmer, a canister of hot cocoa, a package of Pepperidge Farms holiday cookies and a little house box filled with some Ghirardelli chocolates and min candy canes.

I made 8 in total and I'm pleased to tell you they have all been delivered as well!

As you can see, I chose two different plaid flannel fabrics, but I have also made them for Valentine's Day using cuter pink-y fabric. I saw a gorgeous selection at the fabric store the other day, so I'm hoping to head back to get it for some Valentine's Day projects!

Thanks for joining me today and I hope your Christmas is Warm and Cocoa-zy!
